The invisible bullying that parents inflict, which is terrifying upon closer inspection: imposing excessively high responsibilities and expectations on children, using derogatory language to motivate them, emotionally punishing them through cold violence, depriving them of privacy or even publicly mocking them, venting bad emotions onto children or complaining to them, frequently correcting children over trivial matters, using a sense of sacrifice/morality to manipulate children, applying double standards or arbitrarily changing standards when dealing with children, creating double binds—"this way is wrong, that way is wrong." The first person to bully children is often their parents. When we talk about bullying, we often think of school violence, but we ignore the most insidious and deadly form of violence: the invisible bullying by parents, which locks us into a life of unhappiness.
